FAQs
What is a sample size?
A sample size is the number of individuals or observations selected from a population to participate in a survey, study, or experiment. It’s a subset that represents the whole population.
Why is determining sample size important?
Choosing the correct sample size ensures the results are statistically valid and reliable while minimizing the cost and effort of data collection.
How do I determine the right sample size?
Sample size depends on:
a. Confidence level (e.g., 95%)
b. Margin of error (e.g., ±5%)
c. Population size
What is population size?
Population size is the total number of people in the group you want to study. For large or unknown populations, an approximation is often used.
What does margin of error mean?
It indicates the expected range of error in survey results. A 5% margin of error means the actual population value is likely within ±5% of your result.
What happens if my population is very large?
Beyond a certain point (e.g., 100,000+), increasing the population size has minimal effect on sample size. The formula adjusts accordingly.
