What is Pin (Postal Index Number)?

India is a vast country with countless cities, towns, and villages, making it challenging for the Indian Postal Service (and courier companies) to accurately locate addresses. To streamline mail and parcel delivery, the Indian Postal Service introduced the 6-digit Postal Index Number (PIN) Code on 15 August 1972.

The country is divided into 9 PIN regions — 8 for different geographic areas and 1 exclusively for the Indian Army.
